This is a survey concerning the phenomenon that employees more and more often use other technologies than those provided by their company in order to carry out work tasks.

Please read the following text carefully.

Recently, more and more employees do not only use the technologies provided by their company to perform daily work tasks, but instead also use technologies they got to know outside of their current work environment.

In this context, the term technology comprises various technical devices like mobile phones, smartphones, tablet computers, laptops and desktop computers, but also applications and internet services (e.g. Google services, Facebook or online data storage services).

Sometimes, employees realize during their everyday work life that the technical resources provided by their company are not optimal or even inadequate for performing work tasks. That is why these employees change their work processes, start to use other technologies or adjust them to fit their individual needs and meet their expectations. For example, employees bring their own private laptop to work or install programs on their company’s computers on their own, in order to fulfill their daily work tasks. Furthermore, employees develop individual small tools or workarounds, like a self-created spreadsheet in Microsoft Excel that let them safe some clicks in the order processing application. But also the use of their private cell phones for answering work emails is an example for this phenomenon. However, checking private emails using a work computer is not. Thus, to sum it up, the phenomenon describes that employees do not solely use the technologies provided by their company or that they do not use the technologies as originally intended by the employer in order to carry out their work tasks.
